LASG Gets WHO, UN Support for Health Initiative

The Lagos State Government said it had got commitments from the World Health Organisation and the United Nations for an initiative to improve the health care of residents.The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said the support would also strengthen mechanisms for prevention, detection and response to outbreak of diseases.
 
A statement on Monday said Abayomi spoke during a stakeholders’ symposium to commemorate the 2019 One Health Day at the LCCI, Alausa, Ikeja. He said the WHO and UN had backed the state government’s plan to adopt the One Health paradigm.
 
“One Health recognises that the health of the people is connected to the health of animals and the environment. It is a collaborative, multi-sectoral, trans-disciplinary approach operating at the local, state, national and global levels, with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes.
 
“One Health is the concept that emphasises that human health is a factor of the environment and this concept is in line with the themes mandate of the state government under the second pillar, which has health and environment joined together, thus affirming the one health approach,” the commissioner said.
 
He explained that it was imperative for the government to unite the sectors working to protect humans, animals and the ecosystem.
 
Abayomi revealed that the need to improve the health of Lagosians and protect the ecosystem necessitated the One Health strategy, adding that collaborative efforts between various ministries, departments and agencies, as well as relevant stakeholders, could help in achieving the targets.
 
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Olusegun Ogboye, urged participants to join hands with the government to deliver on its mandate of ensuring quality health for all.
