The Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, has encouraged people living with disabilities to take advantage of the health insurance scheme offered by the Lagos State Government to access health care services.

Fabamwo gave the charge during an awareness programme organised by the Empathy Driven Women Initiative International in Lagos recently, with the theme, Disability and Free Health care, Hope in the Horizon?

While delivering the keynote lecture, themed, Special People, The Law, Their Health, Fabamwo lamented that many hospitals to do not implement the policy, which stipulates that people living with disabilities should be given free medical and health services in public institutions.

He said, “In the interim, while the health insurance scheme is being implemented, I think that a special fund can be set aside to cater for the health needs of people living with a disability. Also, pharmaceutical companies and similar corporate organisations who do business with government hospitals should be encouraged to give a certain per cent of their profit to cater to these special persons.

The convener of the initiative, Mrs Uri Ngozichukwuka, said there was the need to focus on the health needs of people living with disabilities.
