Insecurity: We’re No Longer Safe, Doctors Tell FG

On 07/Sep/2019 / In Medical News

The Nigerian Medical Association   has expressed concern about doctors’ safety  following  the security issues in the country. This was contained in a communiqué of the  NMA’s National  Executive Council meeting  in Makurdi, Benue State. The President  of the body, Dr Francis Faduyile,  who  read communiqué, said doctors had become targets for kidnappers and bandits.

Faduyile, who called on President Muhammadu Buhari  to address the security problems in  the country, lamented  that  Dr Audu Sule and Dr Sunday Oduniyi had yet to  be rescued by the police after they were kidnapped  in Taraba State  six months ago.

He said, “Cases of kidnapped doctors have been rising in the country. We hope that the President will do the needful so that we can continue to render our services. We  had to  collate the  statistics of  kidnapped doctors from the different states,  and I can tell you it is very fearful.

“Doctors are no longer  comfortable in this country,  because they have  suddenly become targets  for  abduction. It is important that we address this daily  kidnappings in the country.

“We implore  all levels of government to reduce to the bare minimum  kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry in the country.” The NMA chief  said they had resolved to “use doctors’ stamp as an anti-quackery measure”. Faduyile added, “The general public, judiciary, military and paramilitary should insist on doctors’ stamp on medical reports and certificates.

“The NEC called on the Federal Government to rectify the observed anomaly without delay in the implementation of the Emergency Medical Treatment Fund of the five per cent Basic Health Care Provision Fund.” Faduyile said all levels of government  had failed to prioritise health by not paying  attention to health care financing.
