The Chairman, Healthcare Providers’ Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, Dr Ademola Aina, has said that sincerity of purpose and commitment is needed for health insurance to succeed in Nigeria.
Aina at the 2019 mid-year meeting of the association held recently at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja , said the government must be willing to subsidise health insurance to accommodate the underprivileged in the society.
He said, “Sincerity of purpose, commitment and a very solid experience team to drive the process are needed for any health insurance scheme to succeed. We are happy that for now the people in charge of the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme are seasoned professionals in that field. What is now left is the political will and commitment of the government, they must be willing to put funds into it, they must be willing to carry everybody along.”
He said the meeting was organised to enlighten care providers as well as to interact with the officials of the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme.
“We feel there is the need for providers to directly interact with the regulatory authorities; that is the only way we can have access to health care for everybody and that is the standard all over the world.
“We want the Lagos State government to be responsive to the demands of the providers; we want an all-encompassing scheme that is going to involve everybody, that will be good enough for the populace so that the common things that kill our people will be covered,” Aina said.
He added that the change of leadership in Lagos State should not affect the smooth running of the Lagos State Health Insurance scheme that was unveiled in December 2018.
