The Virtues Unlimited Restorative Justice Initiative has warned the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control against approving the importation of methyl bromide into the country because of its negative effects on humans and the environment.
The Coordinator of VURJI, Justice Olamide Oloyede (retd.), who gave the warning in an interview with our correspondent in Lagos on Monday, said she had written a letter to the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Moji Adeyeye, on this matter.
She said she sent copies of the letter to the Nigeria Customs Service; Federal Ministry of Health; Ministry of Environment; Ministry of Agriculture and other agencies of government.
Oloyede, who retired from the Osun State Judiciary, said the agro-chemical had been banned because it was dangerous to human health and caused environmental hazards by depleting the ozone layer.
The retired judge said the whole world had not been able to contain the effects of depletion of ozone layer, stressing that Nigeria, bedevilled with numerous challenges, could not afford to add the chemical issue to them.
The VURJI coordinator said she was shocked to learn that the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services allegedly denounced NAFDAC’s earlier warning that agro-users should desist from using methyl bromide.
