The Nigerian Hypertension Society, an affiliate of the International Society of Hypertension and World Hypertension League has advised people to check their blood pressure regularly and avoid unhealthy habits that would lead to heart attack and kidney failure.

The group of experts made the call yesterday to mark the World Hypertension Day (WHD), celebrated yearly on May 17 with this year themed, “Check your pressure, Know your numbers”.

The group also urged people with hypertension to consult medical practitioners for proper advice and take their medications regularly to achieve good blood pressure control to prevent complications like stroke, heart failure, heart attack and kidney failure.

The president, Ayodele Omotoso explained that the purpose of marking the day is to increase the awareness of high blood pressure (hypertension) around the world as the ultimate target is to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control the ‘silent killer’.

While explaining hypertension as a situation in which there is sustained elevation of blood pressure above a threshold of 140 mmHg systolic and 90 mmHg diastolic in an adult, Omotoso said Nigeria accounts for about one-third of the adult population that is hypertensive, noting that there is poor awareness of the condition.

He further advised Nigerians to avoid excessive salt consumption, engage in regular exercise as well as avoid unhealthy lifestyles like smoking and alcohol consumption, which is strongly linked to development of hypertension.
