The Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, Benue State, Dr Peteru Inunduh, on Wednesday said that the hospital was set to halt medical tourism as it recorded a giant stride in surgery.
The CMD, who spoke to journalists after a team of surgeons successfully conducted its first total kneel replacement surgery at the centre, recalled the similar success recorded in 2018 with the commencement of a spinal surgery which was carried out by a member of staff of the centre.
Inunduh said that the hospital was set to end medical tourism by providing tertiary healthcare service delivery to the people and save funds for the government of Nigeria.
“You recall that just last year, we successfully did a spinal surgery in this hospital. It is the same drive that has taken us to start total kneel replacement surgery and we think that there are a lot of patients within this area in need of such services.
“We are doing this because we want to reduce medical tourism and save a lot of funds for the Government of Nigeria.”
Speaking earlier, Dr Joseph Okoh, a surgeon, explained that the patient began to walk barely 72 hours after the surgery.
The surgeon noted that four patients were in the queue for similar surgery in the next one month.
Okoh, who claimed to have been trained in Egypt, attributed most cases of arthritis to natural aging process of human beings, trauma, improper fixation of fracture among others.
The patient, Ms Utibeabasi Ikpe, who was also a nursing sister at the centre, said that she started walking 72 hours after the surgery, adding that the pain had reduced.
When asked about the cost of surgery, Ikpe said that she was not bothered about the cost with the relief she now enjoyed after the surgery.
