#JOHESUStrike2018: Patients Get Dumped at UCH Gates as JOHESU Strike Continues

On 21/May/2018 / In Medical News

As the strike action by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) entered its fourth week, health services at the University College Hospital (UCH), were paralysed and patients were still been dumped at the door of the hospital unattended.
The chairman of JOHESU of the UCH branch, Mr. Olusegun Sotiloye, who confirmed the condition of the hospital yesterday, vowed that the industrial action would remain in force until the Federal government honoured the agreement reached with the union.
Sotiloye spoke on the heels of a consultative meeting by JOHESU scheduled to hold on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in all the six geopolitical zones in the country.
The meeting, it was learnt, will also review the industrial action and respond to the call by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on the Federal Government to proscribe JOHESU.
The Hospital’s spokesperson, Mr Deji Bobabade, while responding to the reported shutdown of the hospital yesterday, said “Yes, the strike affected service, research and training in UCH. However the doctors who’re not on strike are doing that which is within their capability.”
It was gathered that scores of patients have turned to private health institutions as the state owned hospitals were also affected by the strike.
Those who could not afford the private hospitals have found solace in traditional herbal centres spread across the state.
Five unions under JOHESU; Nigeria Union of Allie d Health Professionals (NUAHP), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Medical and Health Workers of Nigeria, and Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospital and Research Institution, all complied with the directive.
