Managing Director of National Obstetric Fistula Centre in Katsina state, Dr. Aliyu Mohammed El-ladan said Nigeria has about 500,000 cases of VVF. Dr. El-ladan, who spoke with journalists yesterday, explained that no fewer than 12,000 fresh cases of VVF are recorded every year in the country.
He said VVF cases is on the increase in the country and there is lack of adequate fistula centres to treat such cases. Dr. El-ladan said only 5,000 cases of VVF are treated in the country by different fistula centres set up by the federal government.
He identified funding as major problem facing fistula centres in the country, pointing out that lack of source of revenue hampered their activities. El-ladan said the Katsina fistula centre which was set up in 2014 was yet to enjoy any financial assistance from the state government.
“Since we took off in 2014, Katsina state government has not financially assisted the centre; we depend largely on subversion from federal government.”
He said due to lack of funds, an empowerment programme usually organised for VVF patients had to be suspended by the centre. He said the empowerment programme was introduced by the immediate past administration and had trained VVF patients as well as given them cash assistance to set up businesses.
He however said that the centre in the state had commenced discussions with NGOs on how to assist the centre become viable again.
